Recognizing the unrecognized

I am at Starbucks on West Broadway and Houston street A man who I assume is in his 60's asks if he could sit on bench next to me. However, his voice was soft, so I could not hear him clearly. I looked up from my laptop and asked him to please repeat his question. He apologized and said he was a Vietnam Vet and has voice and respiratory problems. My immediate response was "Thank you for serving for our country" He was so taken by surprise by the comment. In his eyes I saw the young solider in him, who upon returning home felt lost and unappreciated, finally being recognized. He made no movements; spoke no words, until with such emotion he said two simple words "Thank You"
